Chapter 30

Kol

KOL ADJUSTED AGAIN on the faux-leather bench in the corner booth, making that embarrassing squeaking sound. The one that always drew the attention and side-eyes of every person at every other table within hearing range. Even though they all knew what happened when denim rubbed against the always cracking upholstery.

Restaurant benches were not generally made with comfort in mind for persons over six feet tall. Being well over that called for constant discomfort for someone of Kol’s stature. Hence, the need to shift sitting positions often. And the noises were a natural result of it.

He tried not to care too much as he swirled his spoon around his mug of too rich hot chocolate. He actually liked the change of location. Usually he was summoned to an up-scale private club in the VIP section, or a private table at the Oriole restaurant, which meant he had to dress up for a conversation with his father that would last less than five minutes.

Kol’s liquid chocolate had gone cold, but it hadn’t been very appetizing to begin with. He wished he’d brought Nik or Brett with him to at least kill time, since the General always made him wait. But his father had been very specific in his instructions that he come to the out-of-the way, run-down diner—that was no Mack’s Diner—alone.

Being high up in the military, one would think that Eduard would always be punctual for his meetings. And Kol was certain that he was for everyone else, but something about teaching him patience was always the first thing that flew from Eduard’s lips if Kol mentioned the tardiness.

Which was always.

He’d learned early on not to mention it.

The King’s Hound Dog played over the speakers when the chime on the door rang the announcement of another patron.

Kol didn’t even need to glance over to know his father had finally arrived and commanded the respect and attention of every host, waitress, and customer in the entire establishment as their heads all turned toward him. If Kol didn’t have his own, albeit different, respect for his father he might’ve rolled his eyes.

He might’ve rolled his eyes if he’d been a little bit less anxious, too.

He had an inkling about the reasons for the meeting.

“Malkolm,” Eduard said in his commanding voice and slid into the bench opposite Kol. Two of his underlings occupied a table two spots over. Within eyesight. Out of earshot.

“Father,” Kol said, looking his father in the eye. He knew better than to cower, even though he knew what was coming. “Did mom come with you?”

“She’s shopping.”

Kol’s mood deflated even more. He knew the reason his father wanted to meet, but he’d hoped to at least see his favorite parent to ease the blow.

He almost knew she wasn’t aware of the task Eduard had given Kol. She wouldn’t approve of another Dracul male treating a girl the way she’d been treated her entire life. Victoria would never admit that it was nearly the same, just that it was cruel.

Eduard moved
